The Indo-Portuguese Museum in Fort Kochi records the Portuguese presence in Kerala, which began when Vasco da Gama arrived in 1498, and the mark it left on local religion, art and architecture. Its galleries are grouped into five sections: Cathedral, Altar, Treasure, Procession and Civil Life.
Among the oldest pieces are a teakwood altar from the 16th century and a processional cross of silver and wood from the 17th century, shown alongside a 19th-century chasuble and an ornate monstrance. Much of the collection was assembled by Joseph Kureethra, the late Bishop of Kochi, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon has continued to support the museum.
