Thottada Beach lies at Thottada, a suburb of Kannur in Kerala, about 2.5 km off NH 66 between Kannur and Thalassery, 7 km from Kannur and 13 km from Thalassery. The unspoilt beach runs for about 800 metres and is well suited to sunbathing and swimming, and beach houses and guest houses nearby offer reasonably priced rooms.
The small Thottada river, 4.5 km long, reaches the sea at one end of Edakkad beach. A bund built across it about three decades ago keeps fresh water apart from salt, and inland the river spreads into swamps that provide a home for many birds and fish.
