Thirumakaraleeswarar Temple, also called Thirumagaral Temple, is a Shiva temple in the village of Magaral in Kanchipuram district, 12 km from Uthiramerur on the highway to Kanchipuram. It stands on the northern bank of the Cheyyar river. Shiva is worshipped here as Thirumakaraleeswarar in the form of a lingam, with his consort as Tribuvananayagi.
Sambandar praised the temple in the Tevaram, which makes it one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams, and the Periya Puranam records that he came here before travelling on to Kuranganilmuttam and Kanchipuram. The original complex is believed to be Chola work, while the present masonry dates from the 16th century under the Vijayanagar Nayaks. The complex covers two acres, and a five-tiered gopuram stands on the axis of the main shrine. The shrines of Thirumakaraleeswarar and Tribuvananayagi are the most prominent of several within it.
