The story

This temple in the village of Uthiramerur is dedicated to Vishnu as Vaikunta Perumal. It was built in the 8th century by the Pallava king Nandivarman, and the Cholas later renovated and enlarged it. A tall gopuram decorated with carvings and bright colours forms its entrance.

According to legend, Vishnu took this form to bless his devotees and give them passage to Vaikuntha, his heavenly abode, and those who worship here with sincere devotion are believed to receive his blessings. The temple is associated with the Bhagavata Purana, which tells the stories of Vishnu's incarnations, and it holds festivals in his honour through the year.
