The story

This Dravidian-style temple in Kanchipuram, near the Kamakshi Amman Temple, honours Vishnu as Ulagalantha Perumal, the form that measured the worlds in the Vamana legend, with Lakshmi as Amuthavalli. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams and is praised in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. Its oldest inscription dates to 846 CE under Nandivarman III, and one of 1110 CE records a visit and land gift by Kulothunga Chola I.

The complex covers more than 60,000 square feet under a three-tiered rajagopuram topped by seven kalasas. It also contains four Divya Desam shrines, Thiruooragam, Thirukkarvanam, Thirukkaragam and Thiruneeragam, thought to have once been separate temples; Thiruooragam enshrines the serpent Adisesha. Six pujas are held daily, with Brahmotsavam in Thai and Vamana Jayanthi in Avani.
