Teen Darwaza is the three-arched gateway that formed the eastern exit of Bhadra Fort in Ahmedabad. Ahmad Shah I built it soon after founding the city, and it was finished in 1415. The arches, 25 feet high with decorated buttresses between them, open onto what was the Maidan Shah, an outer palace courtyard with a fountain and raised terrace, where nobles and envoys gathered and the sultan reviewed troops.
In 1459 the boy king Mahmud Begada rode out through it with just 300 horsemen to face rebel nobles, and won. Later Maratha governors fired five arrows at a beam here to read the omens for their rule, and in 1812 Chimnaji Raghunath inscribed an order giving daughters an equal share of inherited property. The gate appears in the municipal corporation's logo, and the area around it is now a crowded market.
