The story

Suvarnadurg, the Golden Fort, occupies a little island off Harnai in Ratnagiri district, on the Konkan coast between Mumbai and Goa. The Marathas thought of it as the pride of their navy. It was first built by the Adil Shahi navy for coastal defence and had a shipbuilding yard, and later works are credited to Shivaji in 1660, followed by the Peshwas and the Angres, who strengthened it further.

A tunnel once linked it to the land fort, but it no longer works, so visitors now cross by boat from Harnai port. On the headland is the smaller Kanakadurga, the harbour fort, with a lighthouse. Harnai is a natural harbour known for its large fishing trade and fish market, and the nearest town is Dapoli, about 17 kilometres away. The fort is a protected monument.
