The story

Karingachira St. George's Jacobite Syrian Church stands near Hill Palace in Thripunithura, Kochi. It was built in 722 AD by the Palathinkal and Maliekal families and is one of the old churches of the Syriac Orthodox tradition, named after St George. Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas raised it to the status of a cathedral in 2004.

The church had a place in the public life of the old Cochin State: its vicar was regarded as the representative of the Nasrani community and, at the athachamayam procession, accompanied the Maharaja together with Nettur Thangal for the Muslims and Chembil Valia Arayan for the fisherfolk. Parumala Thirumeni was ordained a deacon here in 1857, Patriarch Ignatius Abded Aloho II held a meeting at the church in 1911, and the Malankara Association met here in 1935.
