01 — The story

The story

St. Francis Church is close to Subhash Chowk in Dalhousie, in the Moti Tiba locality. It was built in 1894 not by architects but by British army officers and civilians living in the town, who wanted a place of worship, and its design recalls parish churches in England.

The approach climbs past statues of Jesus, Mary and St. Francis and thirteen half-walls painted with murals of the life of Jesus. Inside, the Victorian building combines Gothic and colonial features: tall arched windows, carved woodwork and pulpit, a large altar, stonework and Belgian stained glass showing Bible scenes. The church holds services, public meetings and cultural events through the year.
