Dainkund Peak, at 2,755 metres, is the highest point around Dalhousie and gives an all-round view of the valley and mountains, including Khajjiar Lake. The name translates as pond of witches, and locals tell folklore behind it; the hill is also called the Singing Hills because wind in the trees is said to make a tune.
The climb starts at Lakkar Mandi and passes deodar forest, flowering fields and villages of mud houses. On the way are an Indian Air Force base and Pholani Devi Temple, which holds no idol, only a trident. A motorable road also reaches the top for those who do not walk.
