01 — The story

The story

Akhand Chandi Palace in Chamba was the residence of the Chamba royal family. Raja Umed Singh began it in 1747, and building took close to twenty years. Later rulers, among them Raja Sham Singh and Raja Bhuri Singh, enlarged it, and the result mixes Mughal ornament with British features such as the green sloping roof. Captain Marshall added the Durbar Hall, also called Marshall Hall, in 1879, and Raja Bhuri Singh built the Zanana Mahal.

In 1958 the state government of Himachal Pradesh bought the palace from the royal family, and it now houses a government college and the district library. Its name is linked to a prayer to Goddess Chandi held for the raja's safe return from Lahore in 1748.
