The story

Sri Vetrimalai Murugan Temple in Port Blair, capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is dedicated to the god Murugan and is one of the main Hindu pilgrimage places on the islands. It grew out of a shrine to Vinayaka set up in British times for the administrative staff, who were mainly Tamil. In 1926 one of the temple staff asked for a Murugan temple, and work began; the temple, on Ross Island, was complete by 1932.

After Indian Independence the temple was shifted to Port Blair, and its management passed to a well-known Tamil businessman. Its design follows the idea of Chennai's Kandakottam temple. The temple becomes a centre of celebration during the main Hindu festivals of the year, and it opens from 5 am to 12 noon and again from 4 pm to 9 pm.
