01 — The story

The story

Chatham Island lies about 3 km north of central Port Blair, in the middle of Port Meadows among the Port Blair islands. The first British settlement in the Andamans was made here.

The Chatham Saw Mill on the island dates from 1883, under British rule. In 1990 a Forest Museum was added, explaining the work of the forest department and telling the story of timber milling on Chatham. The island falls under Port Blair taluk.
