01 — The story

The story

This Hindu temple in Jagdalpur is dedicated to Venkateshwara, who is revered as an incarnation of Vishnu. Its design is unusual in combining South Indian temple architecture with elements of the Odisha style, a mix seldom found elsewhere in India.

A tall gopuram covered in carved figures of gods and goddesses marks the entrance, and beyond it a large hall serves as the space for prayer. The two main festivals are Brahmotsavam and Vaikunta Ekadashi, when the temple is dressed in decorations and strings of lights and devotees gather in large numbers.
