01 — The story

The story

Bastar Palace in Jagdalpur was raised by the Kakatiya kings of Bastar after they moved their capital to Jagdalpur from Barsur. For generations it was both the family home of the rulers and the place from which the state was administered, and it has seen many of the political and cultural events of the region's past.

The building mixes traditional Indian forms with colonial ones. Its walls are of white and yellow stone, finished with carved panels and jali screens, while the outer walls are painted a pale blue. Tall pillars and decorated arches frame the main entrance. Towers and domes give the palace its outline, the largest being a central dome that looks out over the country around, and the whole front is laid out symmetrically.
