01 — The story

The story

Kanger Valley National Park covers about 200 sq km near Jagdalpur in Bastar district and takes its name from the Kanger River, which winds through it. It was declared a national park in 1982. Thick forest, low hills and waterfalls make up its landscape.

Recorded wildlife includes more than 300 plant species, around 150 kinds of birds and some 35 mammals. Among the birds is the rare Bastar hill myna; the mammals include leopards, mouse deer, four-horned antelope, barking deer, langurs, flying squirrels and striped hyenas. The park also holds several of the region's best-known sights: the limestone caves of Kotumsar, Kailash and Dandak, the Tirathgarh and Kanger Dhara waterfalls, and a viewpoint over the valley.
