The story

This temple in Gooty, Anantapur district, honours Sri Sunama Jakini Maata, a woman worshipped as a goddess by the Suryavamshi Kshatriya Are-Katika community, and is described as one of that community's first temples. She came from Pinnepalli village in Yadiki mandal and was married young to Hanumanthakari Thanji Rao. The story holds that around 1803 she collapsed while fasting and, though found to be alive, was buried on her husband's orders, taking Jeeva Samadhi. Her family later found fresh white flowers on the grave and, after a celestial voice spoke, agreed to her sister Malkuma marrying the widower.

The foundation stone was laid in 2002, the deity was installed in 2003 and the shikhara consecrated in 2005. The annual jaatara, on the second Thursday and Friday of the month of Maagha, brings 15,000 to 20,000 pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states.
