01 — About

About Penukonda Fort

Penukonda Fort was raised by the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century and later became home to rulers of the Adil Shahi dynasty. Its buildings reflect both Hindu and Muslim building traditions.

The fortified area is large and contains palaces, temples, mosques and other structures, many decorated with fine carving and paintings. Over its history the fort saw battles and sieges, and in its prosperous years it was also a centre of learning and courtly culture.

A local legend credits the sage Agastya with a part in founding the stronghold. Religious and cultural festivals are still held within its walls.
