The story

The Chintala Venkataramana Swamy Temple in Anantapur dates from the 16th century, when the Vijayanagara Empire ruled the region. It is dedicated to Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu, and tradition says it was founded at the spot where the god appeared. The large compound holds many smaller shrines to other deities.

A 38-foot gopuram marks the entrance, and the walls and pillars carry sculptures of Hindu gods and scenes from Indian legends. The Garuda Mandapam was added in 1520 by Timmaraja, an official of the empire, in honour of his father Saluva Narasimha. The annual Brahmotsavam falls in September or October, and the 16th-century Tadipatri Fort lies close by.
