The story

Sri Ramakrishna Math in Lucknow is a monastic centre for men belonging to the order associated with Ramakrishna (1836–1886), the 19th-century saint of Bengal. Its shrine holds images of Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda and Sarada Devi, the Holy Mother.

Vivekananda passed through Lucknow several times, first in 1888 on pilgrimage to Varanasi and Ayodhya, then in 1897 and again in May 1898 with Sister Nivedita and other disciples. Local followers led by Sarat Chandra Bandopadhaya began service work from a shack on Hewett Road. Barrister Atul Prasad Sen later persuaded the municipality to give the monks a site in Aminabad, and from 1924 the centre ran as the Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama, affiliated to Belur Math in July 1925. Its early work included an outdoor clinic, relief during floods and communal strife in 1924, a free night school and a library.
