The Residency is a walled group of buildings in central Lucknow put up between 1780 and 1800 as the home of the British Resident, the East India Company's agent at the court of the Nawab of Oudh. Besides the main house the compound held a mosque and a range of service buildings. It is now a ruin protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Its fame comes from the uprising of 1857, when rebel forces surrounded the compound and held it under siege for more than six months, trapping the British residents and troops inside. The walls of the main mansion are still marked by bullet and shot holes from that time. Part of the complex now serves as a museum, where artefacts and papers relating to the siege and to the wider revolt are on display.
