South Park Street Cemetery, once called the Great Christian Burial Ground, opened in 1767 on what is now Park Street in Kolkata and was one of the world's earliest cemeteries not tied to a church. Burials continued into the 1830s. After independence colonial cemeteries lost their funding, and in 1953 the northern Park Street cemetery was marked for demolition, its land leased to pay for this one's upkeep. A 1984 attempt to clear the site for an arts centre was halted by the Calcutta High Court, after many graves were lost; restoration began in the early 2000s.
The tombs mix Gothic, Greek, Egyptian and Indo-Saracenic styles, with touches of Hindu and Islamic design, and range from simple headstones to grand mausoleums of sandstone, marble and brick. Buried here are the poet Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, Sir William Jones, founder of the Asiatic Society, Robert Kyd, founder of the Indian Botanic Garden, and Charles 'Hindoo' Stuart. The tombstone of Walter Landor Dickens, son of Charles Dickens, was moved here in 1987.
