Netaji Bhawan is the family home of Subhas Chandra Bose on Elgin Road in Bhowanipore, south Kolkata. His father, Janakinath Bose, built the house in 1909, and in 1961 it was turned into a museum run by the Netaji Research Bureau, which still has its centre here.
The building follows a traditional Bengali plan, with pillars, porticoes and courtyards; a plaque at the gate carries the name J.N. Bose. Near the main portico is the INA memorial with the motto Ittefaq, Itmad, Kurbani.
Inside are Bose's personal possessions, his father's large bedstead, and the car he used to slip out of house arrest. Photographs and papers trace his life in Europe, his visits to the Andaman Islands and his imprisonment in Mandalay, alongside stamps, Azad Hind journals and German military documents in Hindi translation. The Freedom Library collects writing on the independence movement, including papers by Sarat Chandra Bose, and the Sarat Bose Hall, seating 115, screens documentaries.
