The Armenian Church of the Holy Nazareth stands in the Burrabazar area of old Kolkata and is regarded as the principal church of the Armenian community in India. It served as a gathering place for local Armenians and also housed the Armenian vicar for the country. Inside are carved details, painted frescoes and two altars.
The first Armenian place of worship in the city was a small wooden church of St John, raised with community donations in 1688 and lost to fire not long afterwards. Its replacement was built by Agha Nazar on the community's old burial ground, which is why it carries the name Nazareth. Levon Ghevond, an architect from Iran, oversaw the work, while the bell tower and spire were added later by Manuel Hazarmall. A restoration under Khojah Petros Arratoon brought new decoration and the two altars, one of them dedicated to his brother Gorgin Khan.
A large clock, ordered from Alexander Hare of London, was a gift from Agha Catchik Arakiel. The floor and grounds are crowded with epitaphs and memorial stones, among them the tomb of Rezabeebeh, wife of Sookias. The Magen David Synagogue is a short walk away.
