01 — The story

The story

Mother House in central Kolkata is the home of the Missionaries of Charity, the order of Roman Catholic sisters that Mother Teresa founded in 1950. It is a place of pilgrimage for people from many countries who come to honour her and learn about her life of service to the poor.

The order now runs an international network of hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, along with soup kitchens, orphanages, schools and counselling for children and families. It depends on donations and on large numbers of co-workers and volunteers. Those who want to volunteer with the sisters in Kolkata usually begin by registering at Mother House.
