01 — The story

The story

Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary covers forested hills in southern Rajasthan, in Pratapgarh district on the Chittorgarh side, and is valued for its range of habitats: tropical forest, grassland, wetland and open water. It is known for its teak woods and as home to a population of the large brown flying squirrel.

Leopards, hyenas, nilgai and deer move through the forest and grassland, and the sanctuary is a good place for birdwatching, with resident and migrant species including peafowl, parakeets, owls and eagles. Streams, small lakes and waterfalls run through it, and visitors come for walks, wildlife photography and picnics. Chittorgarh Fort and Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary, with the fort-palace at Bassi, are among the sights in the wider region.
