The story

The Siddheshwar Temple in Solapur is one of the city's chief religious and historic landmarks, sacred to Hindus and especially to Lingayats. It is dedicated to Siddheshwar, or Siddharameshwar, a 12th-century saint, poet and devotee of Shiva who spread the teachings of Basaveshwara and is regarded as Solapur's guardian deity. He is recorded as attaining samadhi here in 1167, and a marble samadhi stands at the centre of the temple.

Siddheshwar is credited with setting up 68 Shiva lingas, including the amrit linga in the main courtyard, and with creating the lake that surrounds the temple to supply water to the people. The annual Gadda Yatra is the temple's best-known festival.
