The story

Naldurg Fort, in the town of Naldurg in Dharashiv district, takes its name from King Nala, its legendary builder, though it was most likely raised under the Western Chalukyas. Its walls take in a basalt knoll that projects over the Bori valley, and it is counted among the important ground forts of Marathwada. The Bahmanis held it from 1351, the Adil Shahis from 1558 and the Mughals from 1686, after which it passed to the Nizams of Hyderabad. Chand Bibi was married here.

Basalt bastions able to carry heavy guns guard three sides, and the walls run for about a mile and a half. Among the ruins are the Barood Kotha, Baradari, Ambarkhana and Rangaan Mahal, two tanks, and the cannons Hathi Toph and Magar Toph, with the Hathi Darwaza and Hurmukh Darwaza as main gates. A dam across the Bori, built in 1613 under Ibrahim Adil Shah II, links the fort with Ranmandala and holds the Pani Mahal within it.
