The story

Akluj Fort stands on the banks of the Nira River at Akluj, about 115 km from Solapur. It is credited to the Yadava king Singhan in the 13th century and was later held by the Bahmanis, Bijapur, the Mughals and the Marathas. Under the Mughals it was also known as Asadnagar, and Aurangzeb stayed here from December 1688 to February 1689. Sambhaji and 26 companions were brought here after their capture at Sangameshwar by Mukarrab Khan, and Baji Rao II is recorded as living here for three months after the British overthrew the Peshwas.

Restored by Dinkarrao and Avinash Thopte with local help, the fort is now also called Shiv Srushti and is counted among the better-kept forts in Maharashtra. Inside, fibre figures show scenes from Shivaji's life, and a visit takes about an hour. It opens from 10 am to 6 pm.
