Shri Mahavirji, the Shri Digambar Jain Atishaya Kshetra, is a major Jain pilgrimage site in the town of Shri Mahaveerji on the Gambhir river, in the Hindaun block of Karauli district. Legend tells that a cow belonging to Krapa Ram, a Meena dairy farmer, kept emptying its milk on a mound near Chandanpur village; villagers dug there and found a sandstone image of Mahavira, later shown to be more than 1,000 years old. The Jain merchant Amar Chand Bilala built the main temple in the 17th century, and a small shrine with the deity's footprints marks the find spot, still looked after by Krapa Ram's family.
The main temple, of marble and red sandstone, rises in three pinnacles with golden kalashas. Its walls carry carvings and gilded paintings from the lives of Mahavira and Parshvanatha, and a 52-foot marble manastambha stands before the gate. Other temples in the town include Shantinath Jinalaya, with a 32-foot statue of Shantinatha, and the mirror-worked Kanch Ka Mandir.
