The story

Shobhnath temple is an ancient Jain shrine in Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh, which Jains believe to be the birthplace of Sambhavanatha, the third Tirthankara; he is said to have taken diksha in the nearby Sahetuk forest. Chandraprabha, the eighth Tirthankara, is also said to have visited during his travels. Jain kings ruled Shravasti in the 9th and 10th centuries, and the temple appears in Jinaprabha Suri's 14th-century Vividha Tirtha Kalpa. An Iranian-style dome was added in the medieval period.

Excavations here uncovered the remains of three Jain temples and many idols from the 10th and 11th centuries, seated and standing, including a notable Rishabhanatha with three umbrellas above his head and lions and a bull below. Estimates suggest the area may once have held as many as 18 temples. Two newer Jain temples date from 1966 and 1995, and three more, two Svetambara and one Digambara, are recent. Kartik Purnima is the main festival, and a fair in October–November marks Sambhavanatha's birth.
