The story

The Portuguese Cemetery, also called Gora Kabristan or Kacheri Cemetery, lies on VIP Road in Kanpur. The road was once known as Amherst Street, and it is still lined with government offices and residential bungalows.

Traders, Portuguese among them, had settled in Kanpur by the 1760s, and after British troops arrived around 1770 the town quickly grew into a major garrison. The death of Lieutenant Colonel John Stephen in the city in 1781 led to the cemetery's foundation stone being laid, and his grave is thought to be the oldest here. Since 1977 its upkeep has been supported financially by BACSA (British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia).
