The story

Shiv Niwas Palace forms the southern part of the City Palace complex in Udaipur, on the shore of Lake Pichola. Maharana Sajjan Shambhu Singh began it in the late 19th century and Maharana Fateh Singh completed it in the early 20th as a royal guesthouse. It received many distinguished visitors, including King George V in 1905 and Edward, Prince of Wales.

As upkeep of the royal residences became costly, Maharana Bhagwat Singh, who succeeded in 1955, turned it into a luxury heritage hotel after his success with the Lake Palace, and it opened in 1982. Its three storeys curve in a crescent around a courtyard with a marble pool, and terraces look over the gardens below the Pichola dam and west to Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace. The interiors have ivory and mother-of-pearl inlay, glass mosaics and frescoes by artists the Maharana sent to England to train.
