Sharana Basaveshwara Temple in Kalaburagi (Gulbarga), north-eastern Karnataka, is dedicated to Shri Sharanabasappa, a Lingayat saint and philosopher remembered for his teachings of dasoha, 'giving is earning', and kayaka, devotion through work. His samadhi lies at the centre of the temple in the garbha gudi, and a lake beside the complex draws devotees and tourists.
The annual jatra and car festival brings people of all communities from across the country and abroad to the sprawling complex. On this occasion only, the saint's silver plate, the Prasada Battalu, is shown to devotees, together with his sandalwood linga casket, the Linga Karadige. Farmers of the region still give part of their harvest to the temple to provide free meals for pilgrims.
