01 — The story

The story

Sannati is a village in Kalaburagi district of northern Karnataka, a short drive from Kalaburagi city, known for its ancient Buddhist remains. It was an important centre of trade, culture and religion in early times, associated with the Mauryan and Satavahana rulers and placed on trade routes that brought it wealth and contact with distant regions.

The Sannati Buddhist complex includes remains of monasteries and stupas, carved pillars, sculptures and inscriptions, which reveal a flourishing Buddhist community and its art. The village also has temples to Shiva, Parvati and Hanuman that are still in worship. In Kalaburagi, Gulbarga Fort, the Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah, the Sharana Basaveshwara Temple and the Buddha Vihar can be added to a visit.
