The story

Ganagapur, also called Devara Ganagapura, is a pilgrimage village in Kalaburagi district where the Bhima and Amarja rivers meet. It is a major centre of Dattatreya worship and is revered as the seat of Narasimha Saraswati Swami, whom devotees hold to be the second incarnation of Dattatreya.

The main shrine keeps the Nirguna Paduka, sacred sandals the saint is said to have left behind before he departed for Srishaila, and these are the focus of worship. Temples of Sangameshwara and Narasimha stand at the river meeting, together with Bhasmada Gudda, the hill of sacred ash. Holy bathing spots called tirthas, among them Shatkula, Chakra, Manmatha, Bhagirathi, Papavinasi, Koti and Rudrapada, are spread around the area. A five-day fair is held in February.
