01 — The story

The story

This mosque on the Jhelum in Srinagar is among the oldest Muslim shrines in Kashmir. Sultan Sikander, who ruled from 1389 to 1413, raised it in honour of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, a Sufi saint who spread Islam through his poems and songs; a wall inside records the saint's death in 1384.

The building stands on a square plan in two tiers, each with a pyramid-shaped roof and double arcaded verandas, and plants grow on the roof in season. Heavy woodwork and fine papier-mache decoration fill the interior, mixing Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic influences. Fires in 1480 and 1731 led to rebuilding and enlargement, and after a 2017 blaze damaged the spire, a restored crown was fitted by March 2018.
