Emperor Jahangir ordered this Srinagar garden in 1619 for his wife, Empress Nur Jahan, and the text credits Ali Mardan Khan with its design. It was first called Farah Baksh, meaning the delightful, until Shah Jahan renamed it Shalimar and made further changes.
The garden rises in four terraced levels and follows the Persian charbagh plan, with a long central water channel lined by fountains, trees and flowers dividing it into four parts. At its heart is the Bagh-e-Firdaus, or garden of paradise. Pavilions, marble sculpture, lawns and flowerbeds fill each section, and the garden is known for its bright spring flowers and rose beds.
