Samangad, a hill fort in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, sits at 2,600 ft on the oval crown of its hill. An eight-foot wall still runs unbroken around the hilltop. Cisterns cut in the rock once gave the garrison plenty of water, though most had fallen into ruin by 1957.
Shivaji greatly strengthened the defences in 1676, and afterwards it was spoken of as one of the "smallest yet strongest" Maratha forts. In 1844 its garrison rose in revolt, seized the fort and shut the gates, but British forces under General Delamotte stormed it and won it back. The British then dismantled the fort, and it has lain in ruins ever since.
