01 — The story

The story

Salim Singh Ki Haveli, in the centre of Jaisalmer, was built in 1815 for Salim Singh Mahto, the powerful and much-feared prime minister of the Jaisalmer state. It is said he meant it to display his wealth and rank.

The mansion once had two storeys more than were allowed, which made it taller than the ruler's palace; the extra floors were later taken down. It is built of the golden-yellow sandstone used across Jaisalmer and glows at sunset. The roof is shaped like a peacock and carries 38 balconies, each carved to its own design, and the interior has murals and finely cut jharokhas.
