01 — The story

The story

The Longewala War Memorial stands in the Thar Desert of Jaisalmer district, on the battlefield where Indian troops fought one of the best-known actions of the Indo-Pakistani war of December 1971. It honours the soldiers who fought and died there and is treated as a landmark of the Indian Army's history.

Late one evening a large Pakistani column of tanks and infantry crossed the border and moved on the Indian post at Longewala, aiming to seize ground and cut communications. A small company under Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, heavily outnumbered and with far less equipment, held the position through the night and into the next day. The attackers suffered heavy losses and gave up the assault before reinforcements arrived.
