01 — The story

The story

The Sam Sand Dunes lie about 40 km from Jaisalmer and form a stretch of sand around 2 km long, one of the most visited dune fields in the region. Sunrise and sunset are the favourite times to come, when the sand turns gold. Nomadic communities such as the Kalbeliyas and Bhopas live in the area and perform their music, dance and crafts at the three-day Jaisalmer Desert Festival held each year.

Camel rides and jeep safaris are the usual ways to explore, and quad bikes can be hired for trips to nearby villages. Sandboarding, rappelling and rock climbing are also offered. Several tented camps near the dunes allow overnight stays, and from late afternoon into the night they put on folk dances, puppet shows and Rajasthani meals. The clear night sky is good for stargazing.
