01 — The story

The story

Vyas Chhatri in Jaisalmer is a memorial pavilion raised in honour of Veda Vyasa, the sage credited with the Mahabharata and other Hindu texts such as the Bhagavata Purana. Jaisalmer's rulers are believed to have ordered it several centuries ago, and it has been restored over the years.

Like other Rajasthani chhatris, it takes the form of open domed pavilions on carved pillars, crowned with finials. The yellow sandstone used throughout Jaisalmer gives it a golden colour that matches the surrounding desert. Carvings show scenes from Hindu mythology alongside floral and geometric designs. The monument sits on high ground, so it gives wide views over Jaisalmer Fort, the town and the dunes beyond.
