The story

Raymond's Tomb marks the grave of Michel Joachim Marie Raymond, a Frenchman who served as a general under Nizam Ali Khan, Asaf Jah II, the second Nizam of Hyderabad. It stands on a hillock in the Tirumala Hills at Malakpet, near the Asman Garh Palace and about 3 km from the Chaderghat (Oliphant) Bridge in east Hyderabad. The tomb is a conical black granite obelisk about 7 m high bearing the initials JR, and it looks out over the Old City.

Raymond's grave became a kind of shrine. Until about 1940 people came on the anniversary of his death with incense and offerings, and each year on 25 March the Nizams sent cheroots and a bottle of beer to the tomb. The Hyderabad area of Mussa Ram Bagh is also named after 'Monsieur Raymond'. The pavilion built by the Nizam collapsed in heavy rain in October 2001; it was rebuilt, the grounds were improved, and the site reopened on 14 April 2003.
