The Akkanna Madanna Temple is a Mahankali temple at Shah Ali Banda in Hyderabad's Old City. Under the Golconda king Tana Shah, the brothers Madanna and Akkanna served as his commander-in-chief and prime minister respectively and lived near the king, close to this shrine of Mahankali, where they worshipped every day before going to court. After the brothers were killed the temple was shut, and it was revived from the debris of Hari Bowli more than sixty years ago.
The temple follows traditional Hindu design, with carvings and inscriptions of deities and their stories on its pillars, walls and ceiling, several small shrines in the premises and a main tower bearing images of many gods and goddesses. It is best known for the Ghatam procession during Bonalu, the festival celebrated across Hyderabad and Secunderabad. In 1998 the temple was attacked by a mob and the idol was partly damaged.
