The story

Commissioned by Mayawati as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the memorial park known as Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal and Green Garden opened in Noida on 14 October 2011. It covers 82.5 acres beside the Yamuna, combining green open space with the Rashtriya Dalit Smarak, a small museum and memorial spread over 33 acres.

The memorial honours figures who worked for equality and social justice, with statues of B. R. Ambedkar, Gautama Buddha, Kabir, Ravidas, Jyotirao Phule, Narayana Guru, Periyar, Birsa Munda, Shahu of Kolhapur and Kanshi Ram, as well as of Mayawati herself. Twenty-four sandstone elephants, each 18 feet high, stand for the symbol of the Bahujan Samaj Party. Built for ₹6.85 billion, the project was criticised by political opponents, and in 2009 the Supreme Court halted work over environmental worries linked to the nearby Okhla Sanctuary, before allowing it to continue in December 2010.
