Ramdevra Temple, in the Thar Desert of Jaisalmer district, is the shrine of Baba Ramdevji, a saint and folk deity honoured by millions across India. Its history reaches back more than 600 years, to the time when Ramdevji is said to have taken samadhi on this spot, and it has drawn pilgrims ever since. Many walk here from distant villages and towns across the desert.
The sanctum holds a seated idol of Ramdevji with his camel beside him, and devotees offer coconuts, sweets and grain in the hope of health, prosperity and protection. The complex is finished in carved marble and sandstone. Bhajans and folk songs are heard all year, and Ramdev Jayanti, the saint's birth anniversary, brings processions and performances. The temple serves free meals, gives shelter and medical help to pilgrims without regard to caste, and runs tree-planting and water-harvesting work in the desert.
