The story

Raidongia Doul stands in Lejai Miripathar village in Dibrugarh district, Assam, about 22 km from Dibrugarh city. The Ahom king Swargadeo Pramatta Singha laid its foundation in 1742, and the temple is said to have been offered as dowry on behalf of his sister Yamini, who married the Raidongia king, head of the Lejai area. A pond dug at the same time still lies beside it. First a Devi temple, it later became a place of Shiva worship and is also called Raidongia Shiv Doul.

The brick temple combines Ahom and Nilachal styles. It rises from an octagonal base to a main spire 45 feet high, ringed by eight smaller spires, and its walls carry sculptures of the avatars of Vishnu from Matsya to Kalki, along with Brahma, Lakshmi and forms of Durga. Duck eggs and Bora rice went into its building materials. Set among paddy fields that draw migratory birds, it fills for Maha Shivaratri when pilgrims come from across the country. It is a State Protected Monument.
