The story

Kareng Ghar, also called the Garhgaon Palace, stands at Garhgaon about 15 km from Sivasagar in Assam; 'kareng' means royal palace in Assamese. The palace was built of wood and stone, and its earliest parts were commissioned by the Ahom king Sukhrungphaa in 1698.

In 1751 Sunenphaa raised a brick wall about 5 km long around the palace, with a masonry gateway. After the old palace was destroyed, it was rebuilt around 1752 under Suremphaa (1751–1769) as the seven-storeyed structure that survives today.
