01 — The story

The story

The Pune Tribal Museum was set up in 1962 as an extension of the Tribal Research and Training Institute, which still runs it, and opened its displays in 1965. It was founded to preserve the artistic and poetic traditions of the state's tribal communities.

The collection covers 47 tribes of Maharashtra. Exhibits include musical instruments, jewellery, costumes and clothing, tools and weapons, household articles and utensils, idols, masks, bamboo work, handicrafts, photographs and Warli paintings. There are plans to let travellers at Pune airport take a virtual tour of the museum from the institute's display centre there.
